The Centre for Logic and Analytic Philosophy at KU Leuven invites applications for a full-time position as a postdoctoral research fellow as part of a research project on

KNOWLEDGE FIRST VIRTUE EPISTEMOLOGY

which is funded by a KU Leuven OT and an FWO grant (PI: Christoph Kelp) and will run until 2017/18.

DURATION: 2 years
STARTING DATE: October 1, 2014.
SALARY: A competitive salary is offered commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
TEACHING: The candidate may be asked to teach up to a total three courses over the course of the 2 years (i.e., on average, less than one course per semester).

At present, there are two doctoral students working in the research group. Additional hires on doctoral and postdoctoral level are expected.

The members of the research group will work closely together and are expected to actively contribute to the project and to activities at the Centre for Logic and Analytic Philosophy.

THE RESEARCH UNIT

The Centre for Logic and Analytic Philosophy is a growing research unit at KU Leuven. At present it counts 5 senior members of staff, 4 postdocs and 7 PhD students among its members. In 2014/2015, 2 additional seniors members will join the Centre. The Centre hosts a bi-weekly research seminar and various workshops and conferences.

The Institute of Philosophy of the KU Leuven is pleased to announce a full-time academic position in the domain of philosophical anthropology. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research record and educational competence.

Academic vacancy

The Institute of Philosophy offers academic education in English and Dutch, to both graduate and undergraduate students; it has about one hundred doctoral students. The faculty has an extensive national and international academic network and has an excellent library.

Duties

Candidates are expected to

- develop a research programme at an international level in the area of philosophical anthropology. Ideally, their research perspective on philosophical anthropology can be situated within one, or more, of the following areas: existential phenomenology, psychoanalysis or philosophy of psychiatry.
- set up collaborations inside and outside of the department, to support and extend the research group’s national and international collaborations, and to set up new forms of collaboration.
- acquire competitive funding and supervise PhDs.
- teach high-quality courses within the area of philosophical anthropology, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. They are prepared to teach courses and seminars in Dutch and English, to graduate and undergraduate students both at the Institute of Philosophy and other KU Leuven faculties.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to

- possess a PhD in Philosophy.
- have a strong research profile in the field of philosophical anthropology. The quality of their research is proven by publications in leading journals and books and through international research experience.
- have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
- have a cooperative attitude and possess organizational and leadership capacities.
- A good command of English is required.

The administrative and educational language at KU Leuven is Dutch. If, at your appointment, you do not speak Dutch at all or do not speak it well, you will be expected to learn the language to a sufficient level within three years; KU Leuven will provide a training offer to that end. If your teaching assignment is exclusively in a language other than Dutch, then it is expected that after three years you will have mastered Dutch sufficiently to allow you to participate in administrative meetings.

The Department of Philosophy (Chair of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy) at Albert Ludwig University Freiburg (Germany) invites applications for a PhD position (80% E13) in the ERC Consolidator Grant MEMOPHI (see Project
Summary below, with the starting date of July 1st 2014. The research project lasts for 5 years. MEMOPHI team is composed of 4 members, the Principal Investigator, a Postdoc, and two PhD students. In the broader context of MEMOPHI, The successful applicant for the open PhD position will investigate the Discovery of Medieval Philosophical Mysticism in the 18th-19th Centuries (see Work Project
Description below).

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in medieval philosophy or medieval history and will have good skills in Medieval Latin. She/he will have a good command of German. A good command of French would be an advantage.

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg seeks applications for a doctoral fellowship in theoretical philosophy. The appointment is for 30 hours per week and will be made within the Austrian B1 salary scheme. The salary will be at least 26,901 Euro per annum, as detailed in the “Kollektivvertrag für die ArbeitnehmerInnen der Universitäten”. The appointment is for four years, and the starting date is 1 October 2014. Applicants must have earned a Masters degree in philosophy by the start of the appointment.

The primary responsibility of the appointee will be to complete a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Christopher Gauker. The topic of the dissertation should lie within the area of theoretical philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, and the history of these subjects). In the philosophy of language, Professor Gauker is especially interested in context-relativity, nonreferential semantics, the nature of linguistic communication and the normativity of meaning. In the philosophy of mind, Professor Gauker is especially interested in mental representation, imagistic cognition, the relation between thought and language and interdisciplinary topics in cognitive development. However, dissertation proposals in other areas of theoretical philosophy will be welcome as well. The appointee is also expected to teach two hours per semester (from the third year onwards) and to assist in administration.

The appointee will be able to complete the Ph.D. program in English. It will be expected that the dissertation be written in English. High competence in written and spoken English will be an advantage. Knowledge of German is not mandatory, although prior familiarity with the German language will be an advantage.

The Department of Philosophy in Salzburg takes an analytic and interdisciplinary approach to philosophy. The theoretical philosophy unit will be led by Professor Christopher Gauker (presently at the University of Cincinnati). Charlotte Werndl (presently at the London School of Economics) has been appointed to the professorship for philosophy of science. A third professor is expected to be appointed within the next few years. In affiliation with each of these positions, the department expects to add a tenure-track assistant professorship as well as a doctoral fellowship. The appointee will join a newly vibrant department. There will be invited speakers, longer-term visitors, conferences, and workshops.
