Princeton University Center for Human Values ,
Princeton, NJ,
USA
Post date: November 3, 2010
Harold T. Shapiro Postdoctoral Research Associate in Bioethics
Deadline: January 14, 2011

The Princeton University Center for Human Values seeks candidates for the Harold T. Shapiro Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioethics for an anticipated opening in September 2011. The Shapiro Fellowship supports outstanding scholars studying ethical issues arising from developments in medicine or the biological sciences. The search committee particularly encourages proposals focusing on problems of practical importance that have broader theoretical interest.

The Harold T. Shapiro Postdoctoral Fellowship in Bioethics was created in 2002 to provide an opportunity for an outstanding scholar to spend from one to three years at Princeton to further their scholarship and participate in the University's teaching program.

The postdoc will spend the term of the appointment in residence at Princeton conducting research and teaching the equivalent of one course each year. The postdoc will participate in the Ira W. DeCamp Seminar in Bioethics and will be invited to participate in the other activities of the University Center for Human Values.

The term of the fellowship is one year, beginning September 1, 2011, with the possibility of extension for up to two further years. Princeton University offers competitive salary and employee benefits. Applicants must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D., M.D., or other equivalent doctoral degree by September 1, 2011. Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the applicant's previous accomplishments and the promise of their proposed research project in bioethics.

Please note that an applicant may have a background in any area of ethical studies, not necessarily in bioethics. However, the proposed research plan should be related to the field of bioethics. The Center particularly encourages proposals focusing on problems of practical importance that have broader theoretical interest. The capacity to contribute to the University's teaching program will also be taken into account.

Lecturer in Moral Philosophy (fixed term, 1 February 2011 – 31 January 2012)

Applicants should be able to display strong research potential, and should have experience of teaching in moral philosophy at undergraduate level. The person appointed will be expected to:

contribute to the Department’s teaching in moral philosophy, for the most part at undergraduate level;
begin to develop their own research;
play a full part in the active research culture of the department, and to join in collaborative research activities;
assist with departmental administration.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to give a presentation to members of the Department on the previous afternoon, and will be invited to join members of the Department for dinner that evening. Johnson Professor in the College

Washington and Lee University is seeking an outstanding teacher of undergraduates and recognized scholar for the Rupert H. Johnson, Jr. Professorship in the College. The successful candidate will be an accomplished scholar working at the intersections of leadership and the history of ideas. The holder of the Johnson Professorship will have a record of significant scholarly publication that explores how individuals and ideas shape the course of history. As important, the Johnson Professor will be a dedicated teacher capable of devising innovative courses that will help undergraduates both to understand the key role that ideas have played in shaping the possibilities for human action and to reflect deeply upon how individual values and actions can result in ethical, social and political leadership to one’s community and world.

The Johnson Professor in the College will join the current Johnson Professor in Entrepreneurship and Leadership in the Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics. The Johnson Professors will have a special role in mentoring outstanding students who are selected as Johnson Scholarship recipients; they will also help oversee the Johnson Summer Internship program in which rising seniors undertake internships and projects aimed at developing their own leadership potential.
