Ethical Issues in Synthetic Biology

The Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship. The position is part of the bioSYNergy project which is funded by the University of Copenhagen?s Excellence Programme for Interdisciplinary Research. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Department of Media, Cognition, and Communication, and will be expected to begin on September 1, 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the project
The aim of the PhD project is to investigate ethical and other philosophical issues pertinent to the emerging field of synthetic biology. The project should contribute to the bioSYNergy project?s aim to promote an ethically sound approach to synthetic biology and engagement in proactive communication of research advances. We are happy to consider applicants who, whilst having a strong academic record, have not previously worked on the research areas covered by the project. The successful applicant will already have a Masters degree in philosophy. The Philosophy Department at the University of North Carolina at Asheville is seeking a Visiting faculty member at the assistant professor level, for the academic year 2013-14 (with the possibility of renewal for one year). AOS: Medieval philosophy broadly construed and epistemology; AOC: Logic and critical thinking. Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities

The position allows for independent research, but the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the center’s research agenda; be involved in ongoing research initiatives; assist in project management, fund raising, and third-party funding applications. In addition, s/he will teach one course per semester, either a seminar related to topics of his/her expertise and/or an introductory course.

The research center is particularly interested in applicants whose scholarship focuses on contemporary issues, intercultural concepts, and global perspectives in fields such as art history, literature, cultural history, religious studies, media studies, anthropology, and philosophy. Fluency in English is a must, knowledge of other languages in as much as it is required by the candidate´s research interests. Professor of Philosophy and Media Theory,
salary grade „W3“

Responsibilities:

Teaching and supervision of students pursuing a study path of art history & media theories completed by a master degree (M.A.); additional supervision of diploma-students in the practical subjects and applied arts who attend philosophical lectures is implied.

The applicant should be able to teach philosophy & media theories comprehensively, extended in scope, and on university level. A specialization in aesthetics, design theory and/or curatorial studies is essential.

Further functional duties are specified in § 46 Landeshochschulgesetz (university law of Baden-Württemberg). Regular attendance to and support of the Academy’s boards of self-administration is indispensable.

Qualifications:

He/She must hold a university degree in the relevant subject and have sufficient pedagogic experience and qualification for teaching art history.

Qualifications in the field of academic research are normally verified by a doctorate (Ph.D.) and a habilitation. Instead of a habilitation other outstanding postdoctoral qualifications or outstanding scientific achievements in a related field outside university research can alternatively be taken into consideration.

A weekly attendance at the Academy is indispensable.
Lectures are held in German.

Appointment as a professor in the public service is usually for life. Applicants who are appointed professor for the first time in their career might be appointed temporarily with civil service status.
