Candidates should hold a Doctoral degree in Philosophy with prior university teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, together with research experience, and a reputable publication record.
Candidates should have in-depth knowledge in phenomenology, ethics or African philosophy. We are particularly interested in candidates who are prepared to link their expertise with our research niche, which is the development of a Research Centre for Phenomenological Studies in South Africa. However, candidates are expected to lecture general philosophy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels across both campuses, conducting research for peer-reviewed publications, supervise post-graduate research projects and assist with departmental administration.

Ethics of Ambient Assisted Living

Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates to work on ethical aspects
of Ambient Assisted Living Technologies to enhance the quality of life of people with
dementia.
The Institute of Ethics participates in a European research project “Dementia Ambient
Care: Multi-Sensing Monitoring for Intelligent” (http://www.claritycentre.
org/claritywiki/images/e/e1/DEMACARE.pdf). The aim of this 4-year project
is the development of personal health systems, enabling people with dementia to
preserve independence and inclusion in society, while improving their quality of life
and the effectiveness of their caregivers. Multisensor data analysis, combined with
intelligent decision making mechanisms, will allow an accurate representation of the
person’s current status and will provide the appropriate feedback, both to the person
and the associated medical professionals. It provides clinicians a comprehensive
image of the person’s condition and its progression, without their being physically
present, allowing remote care of their condition.
The PhD will focus on the analysis of ethical issues around research on Ambient
Assisted Living Technologies for people with dementia. The successful candidate
would be expected to work in a multidisciplinary environment and have expertise in
ethics and an interest in information and communication technologies.. This position
will also involve attending research meetings within the European project.
The Institute of Ethics DCU (see: http://www.dcu.ie/institute_ethics/) was established
in 2008. It focuses on applied ethics and does systematic research on ethical questions
and issues in government, business, and media as well as in science, technology and
health care. Professor Bert Gordijn (http://dcu.academia.edu/BertGordijn) is the
Director of the Institute of Ethics.
Graduates with an honours 1st or 2.1 degree in Philosophy, Ethics, Bioethics, Applied
Ethics or related areas and an interest/experience in Information and Communication

to cover university fees and an annual tax free stipend of €16,000.

Research Project
The Ph.D. position is situated within the research project ‘Epistemology and the Regress Problem: A Probabilistic Approach’. This project focuses on the credentials of infinitism as a new approach to the old regress problem in epistemology, and its goal is to develop a viable probabilistic form of infinitistism. Results of this research are expected to be of interest not only for philosophy and the history of philosophy, but also for disciplines beyond philosophy itself, such as cognitive psychology and informatics. In addition to the Ph.D. position, a new postdoc vacancy will be filled in the general area of infinitistic epistemology.
The head of the project is Jeanne Peijnenburg, Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen.

Job Opening
Suitable candidates for this Ph.D. position:
- pursue an interest in theoretical philosophy, history of philosophy, or cognitive science;
- can play an active role in the research community of the Faculty of Philosophy;
- have, or will soon have completed, an M.A. or an M.Sc. in a field relevant to the project;

Appointment
The Ph.D. position is for a period of four years on a full time basis, starting on January 1, 2012. The University of Groningen offers a gross monthly salary that will range between € 2,042 per month in the first year to € 2,612 per month in the fourth year. The Unit for History and Philosophy of Science (HPS) of the University of Sydney is seeking to recruit a new staff member. The appointment will be continuing, teaching and administration load comparable to leading research departments.

We welcome candidates with expertise in any field related to the various sub-disciplines of HPS. However, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in areas that will compliment the current research efforts of the Unit and of the university. The successful candidate will be expected to cooperate throughout HPS, and ideally will demonstrate an ability to converse with scientists and scholars from other disciplines.

As a discipline, HPS at Sydney has received the highest grade – 5 – in the recent Australian Research Council’s Excellence in Research in Australia (ERA) survey. The Unit for HPS is part of the Faculty of Science, and draws undergraduate and postgraduate students from both science and the humanities. It enjoys excellent relations with departments in the Arts faculty, in particular philosophy, history and Chinese studies, as well as with medicine, leading to collaborations in research and teaching.

The position is full-time continuing (tenure track) and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package: up to $109K p.a. including a base salary up to level B Step 3 of $93K p.a. (under current enterprise agreement a 2.5% increase also applies on a six monthly basis in addition to annual standard career step increments), leave loading and up to 17% superannuation. Visa sponsorship and some relocation cost support will be available for the successful appointee if required.

Tenure Track Position in Ethics

The University of Oregon Department of Philosophy is searching for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Philosophy with an area of specialization (AOS) in Ethics. The area of competence (AOC) is open, but the department is especially interested in those with teaching competence in Gender Theory, History of Philosophy, Social/Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, and Logic.

We are looking for someone who has a broad pluralistic orientation that encompasses a variety of perspectives, which must include being well-versed in approaches from within the analytic tradition. We want candidates who reach beyond moral theory to develop an engaged, embodied, culturally situated moral philosophy. Such a candidate would be interested in topics such as contemporary moral issues, environmental ethics, new research in moral psychology, and issues arising from gender, race, and cultural institutions.

Expectations of teaching include introductory, middle-level, and advanced undergraduate courses, graduate teaching in the area of specialization, mentoring of graduate student research, and directing theses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The University of Oregon is on the academic quarter system, and the standard teaching load is presently five courses across three terms each year.

Undergraduate teaching experience, an appropriate record of research and publication, and a Ph.D. are required. Salary will be competitive depending on qualifications.
