This survey course reviews social issues and the ethical impact of information technology throughout the world. The course examines the policy issues that relate to the use of information technology, such as persona, privacy, rights of access, security, transborder information flow and confidentiality. CMSC 304 is a required course for all computer science majors at UMBC. The CSEE Department anticipates two offerings of the course in each of the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 semesters. Academic vacancy

The Institute of Philosophy offers academic education in English and Dutch, to both graduate and undergraduate students; it has about one hundred doctoral students. The faculty has an extensive national and international academic network and has an excellent library.

Duties

Candidates are expected to

- develop a research programme at an international level in the area of philosophical anthropology. Ideally, their research perspective on philosophical anthropology can be situated within one, or more, of the following areas: existential phenomenology, psychoanalysis or philosophy of psychiatry.
- set up collaborations inside and outside of the department, to support and extend the research group’s national and international collaborations, and to set up new forms of collaboration.
- acquire competitive funding and supervise PhDs.
- teach high-quality courses within the area of philosophical anthropology, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. They are prepared to teach courses and seminars in Dutch and English, to graduate and undergraduate students both at the Institute of Philosophy and other KU Leuven faculties.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to

- possess a PhD in Philosophy.
- have a strong research profile in the field of philosophical anthropology. The quality of their research is proven by publications in leading journals and books and through international research experience.
- have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
- have a cooperative attitude and possess organizational and leadership capacities.
- A good command of English is required.

The administrative and educational language at KU Leuven is Dutch. If, at your appointment, you do not speak Dutch at all or do not speak it well, you will be expected to learn the language to a sufficient level within three years; KU Leuven will provide a training offer to that end. If your teaching assignment is exclusively in a language other than Dutch, then it is expected that after three years you will have mastered Dutch sufficiently to allow you to participate in administrative meetings.

The Department of Philosophy in the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences at the University of Salzburg seeks applications for a tenure-track position in theoretical philosophy. The appointment will be made within the Austrian A2 salary scheme, initial salary being at least 56,485 Euro per year. The starting date is 1 October 2014.

The Department of Philosophy in Salzburg takes an analytic and interdisciplinary approach to philosophy. The theoretical philosophy unit will be led by Professor Christopher Gauker (presently at the University of Cincinnati). Charlotte Werndl (presently at the London School of Economics) has been appointed to the professorship for logic and philosophy of science. A third professor is expected to be appointed within the next few years. In affiliation with each of these positions, the department expects to add a tenure-track assistant professorship as well as a post-doctoral fellowship. The appointee will join a newly vibrant department. There will be invited speakers, longer-term visitors, conferences, and workshops.

Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in philosophy by the start of the appointment. Interdisciplinary inclinations, publications in leading journals, and activity in the international philosophical community will be advantageous. The primary responsibilities of the appointee will be research and teaching in theoretical philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophical logic, as well as historical studies pertaining to these topics). The initial teaching load is four hours per semester before tenure and eight hours after tenure. The appointee will also be expected to supervise Ph.D. and Masters students, to initiate research projects and to assist in administration.

The appointment is initially for six years. After between four and six years, the appointee will undergo a tenure review and, if successful, will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor. (Professionally more advanced appointees may be considered for tenure even earlier.) Expectations for tenure will be agreed to informally prior to appointment and will be contractually agreed to immediately after the start of employment. For candidates coming from educational systems where a habilitation is normal, the completion of a habilitation within four years will be one of the normal expectations. Other arrangements can be requested.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Fluency in German is not mandatory at the time of application. However, the appointee will be expected to teach in German from the third year of the appointment onwards, and therefore prior familiarity with the German language will be an advantage. Masters and Ph.D. courses can be taught in English, but undergraduate courses are usually taught in German.

The appointment is for 30 hours per week and will be made within the Austrian B1 salary scheme. The primary responsibility of the appointee will be to complete a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professor Christopher Gauker. The topic of the dissertation should lie within the area of theoretical philosophy (philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, metaphysics, philosophical logic, and the history of these subjects). In the philosophy of language, Professor Gauker is especially interested in context-relativity, nonreferential semantics, the nature of linguistic communication and the normativity of meaning. In the philosophy of mind, Professor Gauker is especially interested in mental representation, imagistic cognition, the relation between thought and language and interdisciplinary topics in cognitive development. However, dissertation proposals in other areas of theoretical philosophy will be welcome as well. (Salary is at least € 26.901,00 per annum as detailed in the "Kollektivvertrag für die ArbeitnehmerInnen der Universitäten".) This is a fixed term appointment for four years, and the starting date is 1 October 2014.

The main tasks of the appointee will be the completion of the dissertation under the supervision of Professor Charlotte Werndl. The research should use analytic methods to address philosophical questions. The topic of the dissertation is any topic in philosophy of science or logic. Professor Charlotte Werndl is especially interested in philosophy of climate science, evidence and philosophy of statistics, philosophy of physics in particular, statistical mechanics), philosophy of mathematics, and topics in general philosophy of science, such as determinism, confirmation and underdetermination. However, dissertation proposals in other areas of logic and philosophy of science are welcome as well.

The appointee is also expected to teach two hours per semester (from the third year onwards) and to assist in administration. The successful candidate will have a Masters degree in philosophy, philosophy of science or logic. Excellent English skills and an interdisciplinary background are desirable.

The Department of Philosophy in Salzburg is known for its analytic, formal and interdisciplinary approach to philosophy. The logic and philosophy of science unit is led by the newly-appointed Professor Charlotte Werndl (formerly at the London School of Economics). Christopher Gauker (presently at the University of Cincinnati) has been appointed to the professorship for theoretical philosophy. A third professor is expected to be appointed within the next few years. In affiliation with each of these positions, the department expects to add a tenure-track professorship as well as a post-doctoral fellowship. The appointee will join a newly vibrant department. There will be international speakers, longer-term visitors as well as various activities such as workshops, conferences and reading groups.

It will be expected that the dissertation be written in English. Knowledge of German is not mandatory (although some familiarity with German will be an advantage).
