The project
A researcher position (graduate or postdoc level) is available in the project „INTERFACES“, an international research consortium on ethical, legal, and social aspects of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), coordinated by the team in Munich. The subproject to be carried out in Munich and funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will involve conceptual philosophical analyses and empirical studies using methods from social science.
Your tasks
The primary task will be to apply core concepts of philosophical action theory to the field of BCI. The philosophical analysis will be conducted in close cooperation with the legal subproject in Hamburg (C. Bublitz) and in exchange with the international partners in Canada (E. Racine) and Spain (D. Rodriguez-Arías). In addition, the post involves tasks in the coordination of the international research consortium (e.g. organization of workshops and publications).
Your profile
Candidates should have graduated in a relevant academic discipline (preferably philosophy) and have prior knowledge on action theory, neurophilosophy or ethics. An additional asset is a demonstrated interest in neuroscience (esp. brain interventions) as well as competencies in organization and administration. Scientific ambition, strong analytical skills, and the capacity to work in a team are major requirements. Spoken and written fluency in English is essential (while knowledge of German is an advantage).

St Paul's is a selective independent boys’ school with about 940 pupils in the age range 13 to 18, of whom up to 35 are boarders. The Theology and Philosophy Department
This is an outstanding opportunity to join the vibrant and dynamic Theology and Philosophy Department of one of the country’s most academic independent schools. Enthusiasm for philosophy in the school is running high and is increasing year on year. Growth in the number of students opting for our subjects has necessitated the appointment of another full-time teacher to join our ambitious and popular department.
The successful candidate will show excellent ability to teach the philosophy papers on the Pre-U Philosophy and Theology syllabus, the capacity to teach the Edexcel iGCSE in Religious Studies, the ability to contribute to our internally-written schemes of work in Moral Philosophy for years 9 and 10, and the potential to help raise further the profile of philosophy within the school by enthusing pupils with a love of the subject, and by expanding our super-curricular programme.
Teaching in our department is discursive, class sizes are very small, and pupils are extremely bright and engaged. The post would be suitable for those with wholly academic backgrounds as well as for those with backgrounds in secondary education.
Some 30 boys will start Pre-U Philosophy and Theology next September, 25 at GCSE. Our examination results are consistently extremely impressive, and our university entrance statistics are outstanding.
We provide an exceptional range of super-curricular opportunities for our students, including a programme of very well-attended lectures by internationally recognised academics, several student-run philosophy societies, and mentoring for student-led research. We also take full advantage of the public opportunities for philosophy on offer at the Aristotelian Society, the Institute of Philosophy, and London’s universities. We have recently hosted talks by, among many others, Tim Crane, David Papineau, Hallvard Lillehammer, A.C. Grayling, John Cottingham and Jonathan Dancy. The department of philosophy is internationally leading in the philosophy and ethics of technology, and in philosophy of science in practice. It currently includes seven tenured staff members, three tenure trackers, two postdocs, fourteen PhD students, and several temporary faculty members. The department participates in and directs the interuniversity 3TU.Center for Ethics and Technology (ww.ethicsandtechnology.eu). Both the department and the Center have a strong international orientation and include members from many different nationalities. The department is currently in need of two temporary faculty members, one for two years and one for one year, to support its teaching activities and to strengthen its research program.
The Challenge
You teach (80%) philosophy for bachelor and master programs in engineering and social science. You may also teach philosophy courses in the master program Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (https://www.utwente.nl/psts/). Courses may include a selection of the following, depending on your strengths and preferences, and on what is vacant: philosophy of communication, business ethics, computer ethics, philosophy of psychology, academic/research skills and methods, philosophy of (value sensitive) design, human-technology relations for engineers, philosophy of science for students in engineering and social sciences, argumentation theory and logic, professional ethics for engineers, and others. Some courses will be co-taught with other teachers. You perform research (20%) in the area of philosophy, with a focus on the role of science and technology in society. Offer
For both vacancies: You are appointed as an Assistant Professor (full-time). The starting date is March 1, 2016 (negotiable). The gross monthly salary ranges from € 3.400,- up to € 4.654,- gross per month (based on experience) in accordance with the job profile for a “Universitair Docent-2”, under the University System for Job Classification (UJC). Your profile
You hold a Ph.D. in philosophy, preferably with a specialization in philosophical anthropology, (applied) ethics, political philosophy or philosophy of science (in case of the latter, preferably with specialization in social sciences), and an interest in technology and technological developments and/or in epistemological issues of the engineering and social sciences.
You have broad experience in teaching at a university level, preferably including students in science & engineering, social science, or other non-philosophical fields. You have demonstrable didactic skills in teaching, good teaching evaluations, and a passion for teaching. You are able and willing to teach in areas of philosophy outside your philosophical specialization, both in philosophy at large and in the philosophy/ethics of science and technology.
You have either had a focus on technology in your past research or you have a demonstrable interest in focusing on technology for your future research. You have published in peer-refereed journals, and have relevant international experience.
You have a strong command of the English language. All master programs at the University of Twente are taught in English, and English is the official language at departmental meetings. Bachelor teaching is often in Dutch, but in almost all cases teaching in English is allowed.

Post-doc Position in Philosophical Ethics of Natural Resource Management
MCC's Working Group “Scientific Assessments, Ethics, and Public Policy” (SEP) offers a Post-doc position (2016 – 2018) to foster the philosophical-ethical reflection on the (property) rights over and management of natural resources, in particular regarding land and forests in the context of global climate change. The successful candidate is expected to contribute prominently to the scientific output of the group, mostly in terms of peer-reviewed publications. Research questions may include, for example, whether these natural resources should be regarded as (global) commons and what this would more precisely imply for their appropriate management from a social welfare perspective.
Within a few years the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) in Berlin has already established itself prominently in the climate policy research landscape, ranked as No. 2 of climate think tanks worldwide. MCC follows a unique research agenda that focusses on assessing the opportunities and risks of policy pathways regarding global commons, and their implications for sustainable development. MCC's research is driven by policy relevance and is largely interdisciplinary in nature. MCC is a joint initiative of the Mercator Foundation and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). Cooperation with high-profile international partner organizations provides a network of excellence.
Inspired inter alia by John Dewey’s philosophy, the working group SEP examines design options for integrated scientific assessment-making in the context of public policy processes, and in particular how ethical aspects and conflicting stakes can be treated appropriately in these assessments in the case of highly complex, disputed policy issues, such as, for instance, land use and forest management.
Required background and qualification
• Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in philosophy (or be close to completion at the time of application) and should particularly be trained in interdisciplinary-ethical argumentation or political philosophy.
• A background in economics and/or public policy analysis would be an additional asset, but is not obligatory;
• The successful candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research publishable in reputable peer-reviewed journals, and is expected to seriously take an interest in public policy, particularly the management of natural resources such as forests and land;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
• Demonstrated ability to work in interdisciplinary research team, to conceptualize a broad and ambitious research agenda, to plan and execute specific research projects; to meet task deadlines and goals; and to conduct research independently and publish results in peer-reviewed academic journals;
• Contributions to enhancing the research profile of the working group; potentially taking over responsibilities of supervising PhD student (depending on funding, however); potentially contributing to acquire third-party funding.

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at CRASSH is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to join the project Managing Extreme Technological Risk, to work on the evaluation of extreme technological risk. Nuclear power, bioengineering, geoengineering and artificial intelligence are all examples of dual-use technology: technology that gives us power to bring great benefits to the world, but that may also pose great risks, whether from accidents or from deliberate misuse. Any reasonable policy regarding these new technologies has to weigh up those benefits against those risks.
This subproject proposes to examine issues such as: * the use and limitations of approaches such as cost-benefit analysis when evaluating extreme technological risk * the importance of mitigating extreme technological risk compared to other global priorities * issues in population ethics as they relate to future generations; * challenges associated with evaluating small probabilities of large payoffs; * challenges associated with moral and evaluative uncertainty as they relate to the long-term future of humanity. Relevant disciplines include: Philosophy (especially moral philosophy, applied ethics, and formal decision theory) and Economics (e.g., the economics of sustainability, the theory of future discounting), although suitable candidates outside these fields are welcomed.
Candidates will normally have a PhD in a relevant field or an equivalent level of research experience and accomplishment. The research associate will join a team of researchers developing a general methodology for the management of extreme technological risk. The RA will report to the Centre's Academic Director, Professor Huw Price, and will work under the direction and guidance of Professor Partha Dasgupta.
Post-holders will be expected to:
Conduct independent and collaborative research to be published as papers in leading academic journals;
Organise, participate in, and speak at workshops, lectures and conferences;
Develop collaborations with leading research groups;
Lead and collaborate on further funding applications relevant to the project and CSER's broader research aims.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2018 in the first instance.
