The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) at CRASSH is seeking to appoint an academic project manager, who will play a central role in developing CSER into a world-class research centre. We seek an ambitious candidate with initiative and a broad intellectual range for a postdoctoral role combining academic and administrative responsibilities. The Academic Project Manager will work with CSER's Executive Director and Academic Director to co-ordinate and develop CSER's projects and the Centre's overall profile, and to build and maintain collaborations with academic centres, industry leaders and policy makers in the UK and worldwide. This is a unique opportunity to play a formative research development role in the establishment of a world-class centre.
Candidates will normally have a PhD in a relevant field or an equivalent level of experience and accomplishment (for example, in a policy, industry, or think tank setting). The postholder will join a team of researchers developing a general methodology for the management of extreme technological risk. The RA will report to the Centre's Executive Director, Dr Seán Ó hÉigeartaigh.
Post-holders will be expected to:
Coordinate and develop the activities of CSER's research programmes ;
Organize and participate in meetings, workshops and conferences; leverage Cambridge's convening power to assemble world-leading expert meetings on topics relevant to extreme technological risk;
Act as an ambassador for the Centre's research, both within Cambridge and externally, engaging with academics, the media, policymakers, or other external audiences;
Conduct independent and collaborative research within CSER's broad focus areas, to be published as papers in leading academic journals;
Actively seek additional funding for the activities of the Centre; work with CSER's research team to develop research proposals;
The post-holder will be encouraged to set their own priorities within the role and work with a high degree of independence, as well as to bring their own ideas to the challenges of achieving the Centre's research and development objectives.

This subproject asks what can be done to encourage risk-awareness and societal responsibility, without discouraging innovation, within the communities developing future technologies with transformative potential. What can be learned from historical examples of technology governance and culture-development? What are the roles of different forms of regulation in the development of transformative technologies with risk potential? Relevant disciplines include: Science and Technology Studies, Geography, Sociology, Governance, Philosophy of Science, plus relevant technological fields (e.g., AI, biotechnology, geoengineering), although suitable candidates outside these fields are welcomed. Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant field or an equivalent level of research experience and accomplishment (for example, in a policy or think tank setting). The research associate will join a team of researchers developing a general methodology for the management of extreme technological risk, and will work closely with CSER's industry and policy partners. The RA will report to the Centre's Academic Director, Professor Huw Price, and will work under the direction and guidance of Dr Robert Doubleday (Centre for Science and Policy) and Lord Martin Rees.
Post-holders will be expected to:
Conduct independent and collaborative research to be published as papers in leading academic journals;
Produce reports for government, industry, and other organisations based on this research, as appropriate;
Organise, participate in, and speak at workshops, lectures and conferences;
Develop collaborations with leading research groups, and with key contacts in government and industry where relevant;

Science and technology are of paramount social, political and economic importance in the 21st century. They are not only drivers of economic and social developments; they shape our societies, practices and institutions. In order to come to grips with science and technology and to make adequate and appropriate political and policy decisions regarding them, we need to reflect on the ethical aspects of their development, the moral acceptability of their application, and their contribution to the quality of life and well-being. It is now widely recognized that technologies must be developed and used responsibly, as many choices are involved with major implications for health and safety, environmental quality, civil liberties, social justice, and the quality of life.
The 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology (www.ethicsandtechnology.eu) is a cooperation of the philosophy departments of the three technical universities in the Netherlands (Delft and Eindhoven Universities of Technology and the University of Twente). The bundling of forces in the field of ethics and technology in the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology accommodates the increasing need for balanced, high quality and comprehensive reflection and judgment on moral, political and policy issues associated with science and technology.
The 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology is one of the eight Centres of Excellence of the 3TU.Federation (http://www.3tu.nl/en/). It currently comprises more than sixty researchers. It has a PhD programme with currently 15 PhD students enrolled. The Centre has a Scientific Director, Managing Director and Coordinator, joinly comprising the Daily Board of the Centre, a Management Team, consisting of two representatives of each of the three philosophy departments, and a Board of Deans, consisting of the deans of the respective faculties. The philosophy department of the University of Twente is responsible for the daily management of the research centre and houses the Daily Board.
Tasks
Together with the Scientific Director and the Managing Director, the coordinator (who also carries the title Assistant Director) forms the daily board of the Centre.
The primary task of the coordinator is to coordinate the activities of the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology and the Centre’s PhD programme. The coordinator carries out the daily practical management of Centre, and works in close consultation with the Scientific Director and the Managing Director of the Centre. The coordinator is responsible for implementing the policy as outlined by the daily board. This includes the following tasks:
◾Daily management of the Centre, preparing meetings with the Centre’s Management Team and Board; coordination with other Centres of Excellence of the 3TU.Federation; communication with the secretary of the 3TU.Federation.
◾Coordination of the PhD programme, which includes course organization, administration, and evaluation; coordination with other Dutch graduate schools; evaluation of the graduate programme in relation to funding organizations; promotion of the graduate school and recruitment of new PhD students.
◾Organization of 3TU.Ethics events, including the annual research day, workshops, lectures, and conferences.
◾Coordination with international partner institutions in ethics and philosophy (a.o., The Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, The Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) in Australia).
◾Promotion of the Centre’s visibility and development and execution of communication plan, which includes website maintenance, promotion of the Centre on electronic mailing lists, developing outreach materials.
◾Finances, which include the administration of budget requests and declarations, support with attracting external money from funding organizations, coordination joint research proposals (KP7, Horizon2020, NWO).
Your office will be located at the University of Twente, where the daily board meetings will also take place. If at any point in the future, the directorate of the Centre were to move to one of the other two universities, your office will move there as well.

◾PhD in philosophy (or related discipline), with an interest in technology and engineering and ethical aspects of technology. We will also consider outstanding candidates without a PhD.

At about 10,000 students, Klagenfurt University is a young, lively and innovative university at the intersection of Alpine and Mediterranean cultures – in a region famous for its quality of life. The newly established Professorship for Visual Culture is to represent this interdisciplinary field of research within the School and beyond, and to deepen it in exchange and collaboration with members of the School that are already doing research in this area. The Professor’s activity is to promote and develop the research in Visual Culture at Klagenfurt University. A person of excellent qualifications and international scientific renown is required, able to represent the topic in research and teaching with great commitment, to successfully establish co-operations, and to pursue a demanding and forward-looking research programme.
The duties of the Professorship include:
• Representation of the thematic focus on Visual Culture in research and teaching.

• The applicant is to have a background in the Humanities with a clear focus on Visual Culture (possibilities range from digital media, film/video/TV/photography, to classical fine arts). They should be familiar with the philosophical and theoretical discourses of image theory. In addition, they are to have worked on the cultural determination of seeing and visual practices in a historical and/or social perspective.

The project Intuitions in Science and Philosophy hires

The Sapere Aude project Intuitions in Science and Philosophy, funded by the Danish Council for Independent Research and led by Samuel Schindler, will investigate the role and nature of intuitive judgements in science and philosophy. Whereas intuitive judgements in philosophy have been much debated in recent years, little attention has been paid to intuitive judgments in science. This is where the project will step in. In particular, it will investigate intuitive judgements in thought experiments in physics and in the form of acceptability judgements in linguistics. The results of these investigations will be related to debates about the evidential function of intuitive judgements in philosophy.
The project will cooperate with several renowned scholars in the field and organize two major conferences and a workshop. Each of the project members will be able to visit the project’s cooperation partners abroad. The starting date is negotiable. The project duration is four years. The tasks of the team members will be roughly as follows:
Postdoc position 1 (2 years): “Justifying intuitive judgments”. Together with the PI of the project, the postdoc will, amongst other things, conduct qualitative and quantitative surveys. In a set of extended historical case studies the postdoc will investigate the role intuitive judgments in thought experiments have played in theory choice. The Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP) and the Chair of Philosophy of Science at the Faculty of Philosophy, Philosophy of Science and Study of Religion at LMU Munich seek applications for an Assistant Professorship (non-tenure-track).

Die Universität Witten/Herdecke wurde als erste private Universität in Deutschland im Jahr 1982 gegründet. Aufgabenbereich
Die neue Professur soll in Lehre und Forschung die philosophischen Grundlagen der Psychologie vertreten. Erwünscht ist dabei insbesondere eine ausgewiesene Expertise in einem der folgenden Bereiche: Erkenntnis- /wissenschaftstheoretische Grundlagen der Psychologie, Embodiment oder Bewusstseinsforschung. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
for a fixed term from October 1, 2015 to August 31, 2018 (35 months) associated
with the Academy of Finland project, "Dependence and Independence in Logic:
Foundations and Philosophical Significance".
The project is led by Professor Gabriel Sandu and also includes funding for
another
3-year post-doctoral position from September 1, 2016 onwards (and will be
advertised later on).
This is an interdisciplinary project which will focus on the systematic
analysis of notions of dependence and independence that have emerged from
recent work in logic (Independence Friendly-Logic, Dependence Logic,
Independence Logic, Modal Dependence Logic, etc) in contrast to counterfactual
notions of dependence/independence based on the work of Lewis and Stalnaker
(closest possible world) and causal notions of dependence (Pearl).
There is some flexibility in the exact research area of the postdoc, but it
should have a clear bearing on one of the project's central goals, which
include
1. The development of extensions of dependence/independence logics with modal,
epistemic and probabilistic notions.
2. The study of the differences between functional, probabilistic and causal
notions of dependence/independence in relation to their explanatory role in
recent applications (social choice theory, quantum theory, linguistics).
3. The significance of dependence/independence logics for philosophy of logic
and foundations of mathematics.
The salary will be 3 140 euros per month. It is based on levels 5/3 in the
salary system of Finnish universities.
